Setting Roots in Small Town Alaska

For almost 8 years now, I’ve been living in some part of Southeast Alaska. Home to the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in the world. This region is characterized by islands, large and small, fjords, glaciers, and mountains that meet the sea. It is the ancestral home of the Tlingit, who have been tending these trees and canoeing these waters of the Inside Passage for over 10,000 years.

Driving to Alaska, Coming Back Home

The familiar shapes of fluffy horsetail, sleepy hemlocks, greeted us from the ground and the sky. The familiar smells of skunk cabbage rolled through on the damp forest breeze, and the vibrant green of spruce tips, plumed in new growth speckled the dense texture of endless trees. The salty air licked our skin, along with the seemingly endless golden hour of the soon to be midnight sun.
